back in october we got an order to produce 2,163,000 cards for a promotion for kraft foods. it was embedded with lettuce seeds and then attached to the inside page of a magazine. what was i thinking, how could i get it done, what would it take? looking back to an october post…..

“2,851,200 square inches upholstery foam + 1,232,000 square inches cardboard + 1,436,400 square inches pellon +
155,232 square inches felt + 92,400 square inches plywood + 200 pounds lettuce seed + 18,750 pounds recycled fiber +
countless screws, nails, bottles of glue, and trips to the hardware store = 2,000,000 plantable pieces
quite possibly the largest order in plantable paper history…booyaw acheived.”

that just about sums it up. im sure the numbers are a bit different but it was a lot of work! i was so greatful to have an amazing team of papermakers and support crew! without them it would not have happened. not only did we get it done but we did it on time! the final count was 2,237,745 pieces which equals 78,418 sheets of 19″x25″ lettuce paper.

some how we need to figure out how to fit 16 pallets in our mill so that we can ship it all at once! oh how i wish we had a second story. this has been such a learning experience and taught us so much. when all is said and done i hope to put together a slide show of the entire order. a memento of our accomplishment.

WE DID IT!!!

After tons of hard work and quite a bit of stress we have finally reached the halfway point on our big order! Now it’s time to really push the envelope and see if we can make local handmade paper history! Only 7 weeks remain with just over 37,000 sheets to go. The pressure’s on!

on saturday we had so much fun with all the kids that came out for the easter egg run. we were offering free card making. we brought out some great spring colors of handmade paper as well as some plantable paper. what better way to start off spring then by giving a card that turns into a garden of flowers! thanks everyone!

it is my showcase of what has and can be done with plantable paper. you can add more then wildflower seeds. virtually any seed that is small enough can be embedded in the paper. as for printing methods…yes letterpress does in my opinion look the best but if made smooth enough and thin enough it will run on a offset press as well as a home inkjet printer. so the next time your thinking about how to make an impression try using some plantable paper and give something back!

we just finished up 1,500 belly bands for a client. this was fun to work on, with a color like that how could you not keep smiling? the paper was made from recycled fibers and embedded with wildflower seeds. the type was done on our letterpress and the brackets were die cut. i was very pleased with the end results and just to make sure it really did germinate i tested a sheet. still after all these years i get so excited when i see little sprouts emerging through the paper!
